VANCOUVER, Aug. 23, 2016 /CNW/ - Dr. Sue Swiggum, recently retired Senior Physician Advisor in Safe Medical Care at the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) is a recipient of the 2016 Canadian Medical Association's (CMA) May Cohen Award for Women Mentors.

The May Cohen Award for Women Mentors is presented to a woman physician who has demonstrated outstanding mentoring by:

  • Encouraging, facilitating, and supporting a mentee in career and leadership development
  • Contributing to the success of a mentee through the sharing of insight, perspective, and knowledge based on the mentor's experience
  • Helping the mentee develop a network of relationships that might not normally be available early in a career
  • Acting as an effective role model in medicine or medical leadership

Throughout her career with the CMPA, and more than 35 years practising medicine, Dr. Swiggum mentored and supported many other physicians, inspiring others to achieve their dreams.

"Sue has spent years sharing her knowledge and understanding, imparting her learnings and wisdom, and taking an interest in the careers and professional lives of hundreds of physicians," said Dr. Hartley Stern, CEO and Executive Director of the CMPA. "Sue has sponsored and helped to develop many physicians and physician leaders, and did so with grace, humility, and strength."

"I am deeply honoured to be recognized for something that has brought me such joy throughout my career," said Dr Sue Swiggum. "I have been coached by many truly outstanding medical leaders and I encourage all of my colleagues to think about how they can share their wisdom and make a difference in young physicians' lives. To do so is incredibly rewarding."

Dr. Swiggum will receive her award this evening during the CMA Awards and President's Gala to be held at the Vancouver Convention Center.
