HARRISBURG, Pa., Aug. 23, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) has named the Pennsylvania Patient Safety Authority's Patient Safety Visual Analytics Reporting System as a finalist in the Emerging and Innovative Technologies category for their prestigious 2016 State IT Recognition Awards.

In 2003, the Authority developed one of the nation's most comprehensive databases of medical error event reports through its Pennsylvania Patient Safety Reporting System (PA-PSRS).

The Authority has received approximately 2.5 million medical error reports from Pennsylvania acute healthcare facilities through 2015. The initial installation of the PA-PSRS database made it possible for the Authority to respond to complex data requests made by its staff.

From this data, the Authority has been able to produce vast amounts of analytics and education to the help Pennsylvania healthcare facilities improve patient safety and reduce medical errors.

The enhancement of PA-PSRS through the Authority's implementation of SAS Visual Analytics saved hundreds of thousands of dollars in database development and allowed staff to gain new understanding of the data.

The launching of this platform strengthened analytics and created new opportunities for the Authority to provide patient safety strategies to healthcare facilities.

"The development of the Patient Safety Visual Analytics Reporting System created opportunities for the Authority's staff to conduct custom analytic inquiries into the PA-PSRS data and to examine patient safety concerns with fresh perspectives," states Howard Newstadt, finance director and CIO for the Authority, and author of the report.

"Being recognized by NASCIO is not only an honor, but confirms the Authority's technology leadership position, meeting the needs of our ever changing healthcare systems and cultures," adds Newstadt.

Out of the 140 award nominations, the Authority's entry was one of only two from Pennsylvania to achieve finalist status among 36 national finalists in the 10 NASCIO IT Recognition Award categories.
