HORSHAM, Pa., Aug. 30, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- DRUGSCAN© Pharmaceutical Services, leaders in conducting laboratory-based manipulation and extraction studies, announced today that their scientists will be presenting data at the PAINWeek 2016 conference, from a study they conducted to assess the smoke-ability of opioids. The data presented can help guide developers of abuse-deterrent products.
Smoking is a common route of administration for abusers of opioids. The ability to deter smoking, as well as other routes of administration, is a goal of abuse-deterrent opioid formulations. The FDA recommends that abuse-deterrent product developers conduct in-vitro experiments to assess the smoke-ability of these products. The studies conducted by DRUGSCAN, using a novel in-vitro smoking apparatus developed by DRUGSCAN and Pinney Associates, assessed the optimal smoking temperatures of two commonly abused opioids. The findings observed from this study can serve as a benchmark for abuse-deterrent opioid developers.
"We are proud to work with developers of products to stem the abuse of opioids which is a serious health crisis in the United States and elsewhere" said Dr. Anthony Costantino, Ph.D., President and CEO of DRUGSCAN©. "In-vitro studies like these should help developers create safer opioid products that deter the common methods of abuse".
The following poster will be presented during the PAINWeek 2016 poster session on Thursday, September 8 from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm:
