SAN ANTONIO, Oct. 10, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 1 in 4 people struggle with a mental illness. Although the United States is improving the awareness of mental health issues, the stigma, lack of access to treatment, and the gaps in care are wreaking havoc on the lives of those who struggle with mental health concerns such as eating disorders, addictions, depression, and anxiety amongst others. Their families are similarly affected as they struggle to find adequate treatment solutions and do not receive the same level of support or skills as their loved one.
As current systems of care are proving to be inadequate, Amanda Koplin, a Licensed Professional Counselor, created Be A Hero to address these concerns. "Be A Hero is taking a new approach to treating individuals who struggle with a mental illness by taking a holistic approach and providing treatment in the home," says Koplin. She continues, "recovery does not happen in 60 minute intervals in the offices of outpatient providers." As someone who struggled with an eating disorder, depression, and anxiety herself, Koplin understands exactly how detrimental the lack of support at home can be to those who are desperately grasping for life and struggling in their own recovery. Currently, as a mental health counselor, her mission is to help bridge these gaps between offices and real life in order to potentially save people's lives and improve the quality of life for those with mental health concerns.
Not only does her unique approach allow the individual to learn and apply new skills in the context of real life, it provides them and their families with the support they need to lower relapse rates, hospital admissions, and longer-term consequences stemming from prolonged periods of being symptomatic. Part of her model includes the option of having an in-home coach who can come be with clients anywhere from 1 hour all the way up to 24 hours a day to help them navigate their struggles in real time and implement the solutions of their treatment team.
Treatment centers around the nation provide a great place to start the process of recovery. Life, however, doesn't happen in a treatment center and individuals are given 24 hour support and sheltered from many of their triggers. When they return home, they have all of their familiar triggers and none of the support. In addition, their families have not received the intensive level of care as their loved one and are not naturally equipped with the knowledge, skills, and support required to help their struggling family member be successful in that environment. Be A Hero is changing that now.
