Major research presentations profile Non-Invasive Minute Ventilation Monitoring in multiple patient care settings

Respiratory Motion
Posted on: 26 Oct 16

CHICAGO, Oct. 25, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- At the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) 2016 Annual Meeting, scientific presentations from globally recognized university hospitals showed Respiratory Motion's non-invasive respiratory volume monitor, ExSpiron™, as a highly effective technology for identifying changes in respiratory status in multiple hospital environments to optimize treatment strategies.

Research featured in this year's ASA clinical presentations specifically review the role of Minute Ventilation Monitoring with the ExSpiron in post-anesthesia care units (PACU) and on the general hospital floor. The technology delivers continuous, quantitative measurements to provide real-time information, develop care pathways, and improve patient care.

This comes amid new safety guidelines around opioid management from industry and government, including the ASA, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).

Researchers from five leading teaching institutions employed Respiratory Motion's ExSpiron monitor in their clinical studies, showcased at the ASA 2016 meeting:

"Respiratory Volume Monitoring Used in the Identification of Patients At-Risk for Opioid Induced Respiratory Depression or Residual Neuromuscular Blockade," (Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts, and the University of Texas Health Science Center, Houston, Texas)

"Frequency of Low Minute Ventilation Events as Indication of Post-Operative Respiratory Depression," (Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, Ohio)

"Non-Invasive Assessment of Low Minute Ventilation in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit and General Hospital Floor," (Tufts Medical Center, Boston, Massachusetts)

"Adequacy of Ventilation in Patients with Post-Operative Apnea: Minute Ventilation Versus Respiratory Rate," (Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota)

Additionally, at the Society of Anesthesia and Sleep Medicine Meeting, preceding the ASA 2016:

"Using Non-Invasive Respiratory Volume Monitoring in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit to Monitor Post-Operative Respiratory Depression in Patients Identified as At-Risk for Obstructive Sleep Apnea Utilizing the Flemon's Criteria," (Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota)

"Are Sleep Apnea Patients at Increased Risk for Opioid Induced Respiratory Depression After Surgery Compared to Controls?" – Pilot Study

"It is gratifying to see such compelling research from the clinical teams at these major institutions." said Jenny Freeman, MD, President and CEO of Respiratory Motion, Inc. "Our breakthrough product, the ExSpiron, for the first time enables health care providers to monitor breathing in patients that are not on a ventilator -- like an EKG for respiration. Research presented at ASA adds to an expanding literature base that shows Minute Ventilation Monitoring makes a major difference in clinicians' ability to detect early changes in respiratory status, instead of waiting for respiratory failure to occur.  Minute Ventilation -- the ability to monitor respiratory volumes continuously, non-invasively, and in real-time -- is now available to help clinicians improve patient safety across the continuum of care."
