"Ethicon's mission is to lead the way in resolving the burden of obesity for both patients and healthcare systems by expanding access to care and demonstrating the critical value of treatment through research and evidence, while also enabling new technologies," said Dr. Elliott Fegelman, Therapeutic Area Expert, Metabolics, Johnson & Johnson Innovation.

Growing evidence on the multiple benefits of bariatric surgery
Ethicon is committed to driving a deeper understanding of bariatric surgery and its impact on patient outcomes, including which patients see the greatest impact from specific surgical procedures. By investing in and leveraging a growing body of clinical research and evidence, Ethicon is advancing a global conversation on bariatric surgery as a potentially health-improving procedure for patients suffering from obesity and obesity-related health conditions. Recent evidence includes:

  • Accepted as a late-breaking podium presentation at ObesityWeek, Partial Jejunal Diversion (PJD): A Novel Approach to Glycemic Control in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) highlights research from Ethicon's Metabolic Applied Research Strategy (MARS) program related to PJD and its impact on the glycemic index.
  • The STAMPEDE (Surgical Treatment And Medications Potentially Eradicate Diabetes Efficiently) trial was designed to compare intensive medical therapy (IMT) with and without bariatric surgery as a means to improve glycemic control in obese patients with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes (T2DM).

New education programs and training to raise the standard of care
At ObesityWeek, Ethicon is sponsoring a highly interactive program, The Case for Revisional Bariatric Surgery, where Dr. Kelvin Higa and Dr. Eric DeMaria will lead a discussion on the efficacy and challenges of revisional bariatric surgery. In addition, Ethicon will host several presentations with key thought leaders in booth #301, including:

  • "Current and New Approaches to Duodenal Switch" (Dr. Mitchell Roslin/Dr. Peter Ng)
  • "Building the Successful and Thriving Bariatric Program" (Dr. Stan Hoehn/Dr. Shawn Garber)
  • "Bariatric Surgery for Orthopaedic Patients" (Dr. John Morton/Dr. John Bottros)

As a result of Ethicon's strategic collaboration with Touch Surgery, Ethicon will launch a new sleeve gastrectomy procedure simulation. The new simulation is part of a broader commitment to provide digital content on the Touch Surgery platform that allows surgeons and surgeon trainees to educate themselves anytime, anywhere.
