As Therapeutic Area Head for Medical Affairs, Bone Metabolism / Rare Disease, you will have an incredible opportunity to lead and coordinate the medical activities required for improving the lives of patients with a disabling bone condition. X-Linked Hypophosphatemia (XLH) is a rare genetic disorder of phosphate metabolism leading to severe hypophosphatemia.  Those with this condition have a spectrum of painful abnormalities including rickets, osteomalacia, spinal stenosis and osteoarthritis.

With a new treatment on the horizon, you can be integral to this incredible journey, which will change the lives of patients living with this condition. Kyowa Kirin International plc, in partnership with Ultragenyx are progressing the development of a recombinant, fully human monoclonal antibody against the phosphaturic hormone fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23).  We have demonstrated impressive clinical activity and a near term planned European submission for conditional approval.  With this rare disease drug and with an ever expanding development portfolio in a global role, you will be in a position to demonstrate true leadership, influencing across both Western Commercial markets as well as with Japanese colleagues.

In this role you will

  • Lead Kyowa Kirin’s medical interests with our development partner, commercial teams and payer/market access partners.
  • Develop and deliver the launch and post launch medical communications strategy including the development of Promotional Claims Guide, MSL strategy, and communications.
  • Develop and lead an Early Access programme.
  • Lead and deliver clinical development, lifecycle management investigator sponsored trial program, real world evidence generation (coordinating always with affiliate personnel).
  • Develop and lead the KOL, patient advocacy, scientific organisation strategy and activity plans and lead congress activity, disease based education, and product based education for internal and external customers.
  • Develop and deliver the publication plan partnering to support evidence generation and dissemination
  • Represent affiliate companies as the medical lead into HQ regulatory, QA and drug safety discussions


In order to be successful in this role you will be a Medical Affairs Physician with significant industry experience, ideally in the development of an orphan disease compound or endocrinology / bone therapeutic area. You will also have:

  • Broad understanding of drug promotion and compliance standards in the EU and US
  • Demonstrated ability to influence global cross functional teams and stakeholders.
  • Importantly, you will be a can-do, roll your sleeves up and get the job done character.
