Our client, a growing biopharmaceutical company, are currently recruiting for a Senior Manager, Packaging and Labelling. 

Summary of Job:

Reporting to Director, Manufacturing Process Development, the Senior Manager Packaging and Labeling will direct and oversee commercial packaging and labeling operations at the company Contract service providers.  Activities include approval and control of artwork, packaging documentation, cost analysis and improvements at contract service providers.  Work encompasses identifying and resolving complex issues such as serialization where analysis of situations requires an in-depth knowledge of industry capabilities.    The individual will be a subject matter expert on packaging and will establish metrics and prepare summary reports.  He or she may lead project subteams as necessary, including development and tracking of project timelines.     

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Senior Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of packaging and labeling for company’s commercial and development products at third party contract service providers.   Senior Manager will define, implement and manage the art approval workflow and implementation of approved artwork at global third party contract service providers.   Knowledge of serialization standards and best practices is essential.  Activities would include but are not limited to:

  • Establish systems and controls for commercial artwork, product identity (NDC, GTIN identifiers) and package process development
  • Oversee serialization efforts at company to meet global requirements
  • Work with development and marketing organizations to understand, model and recommend packaging solutions that are technically sound and meet the needs of the organization
  • Ensure that proper methods are utilized for package qualification, testing, validation, bulk shipping, sampling, and inspection at contract service providers
  • Review and approve validation and production documents related to packaging, including specifications, Bills of Material, protocols, development reports and batch documentation
  • Prepare technical reports documenting packaging development and improvements that are suitable for reference or inclusion in Regulatory documentation.  Prepare and review relevant sections of Regulatory dossiers
  • Develop data collection plans to monitor product performance.  Perform cost analysis and trending where appropriate
  • Resolve outstanding quality issues, deviations and CAPAs related to transport and packaging
  • Stay up-to-date on industry best practices in the area of packaging and labeling, and where appropriate, implement improvements through clear communication with the contract service providers and company management.
  • Lead project or subproject teams to complete responsibilities
  • Serve as an company internal expert on issues related to packaging and product labeling

Job Requirements: 

  • Bachelors of Science in Packaging Engineering, Industrial Engineering with a packaging focus, Material Science or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 7 years relevant experience in packaging engineering or manufacturing operations including at least 3 years of pharmaceutical packaging experience
  • Must have at experience in the following areas:
  • Pharmaceutical packaging operations, especially for solid oral dosage forms
  • Experience in managing artwork and labeling control
  • Experience managing and overseeing completion of work at contract service providers

Other Skills and Abilities:  

  • Must be organized, understand the science, manufacturing and packaging processes, regulatory guidance and current industry practices
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively, and provide team leadership when appropriate
  • Demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects and meet timelines
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to analyze, illustrate, summarize and present data and recommendations to leadership or decision makers in the most informative/effective format
  • Good documentation and record keeping skills and attention to detail
  • Must be goal-oriented, quality-conscientious, and customer-focused.
  • Experience with the preparation of regulatory dossiers in a global environment
  • Experience with transport and good distribution practices
  • Familiar with Quality by Design, Six Sigma, FMEA and risk based analysis
  • Knowledge of printing and converting operations and service providers
  • In depth knowledge of serialization requirements
  • Willingness and ability to travel (up to 30%)
