Job Summary:

My Client, a medical device company in the Oxfordshire/Berkshire area. The position is a broad ranging laboratory and office based role to play a key role in product development through preclinical, and clinical phases. This will involve leading R&D function activities on development projects, developing and implementing research plans, problem solving, and translating the outputs to GMP manufacture of novel protein biomaterial class 3 products.

Principal Responsibilities

This role involves development of early stage class 3 products from a proprietary protein biomaterial platform technology. The Senior Scientist will interface with both internal and external research teams to develop and analyze prototypes, further the development of core technologies and identify and implement new technologies to enable GMP manufacturing of novel implantable devices.  Day to day the role will include laboratory based experiments to development technologies/processes as part of product development, supervising junior team members where appropriate, and assembling data to support the safety and performance claims of the resulting products.

The Senior Scientist is responsible for:

  • Functioning as an R&D team member on product development project teams
  • The planning and delivery of experimental programs as part of new product development projects.
  • The development, production and verification of product prototypes.
  • The development of manufacturing processes and process controls
  • Generating new data in support of scientific, regulatory and marketing claims and indications.
  • Supervision of R&D project team members as appropriate for the projects.
  • Contributing to the development of, and implementing, detailed project plans and technological processes to progress new product developments. Identifying and implementing technologies and processes required for scale up of product manufacturing.
  • Reducing to practice, documenting and implementing GMP and QA procedures for existing, and new manufacturing processes.
  • Managing delivery of work from external partners and subcontractors.
  • Complying with requirements and procedures for Design Control, Risk Management and other relevant regulatory requirements (ISO 13485, FDA QSR 820.3).
  • Writing and critically assessing technical and clinical literature.
  • Generating, or assisting with generation, of new intellectual property and comply with procedures for IP generation and invention disclosure.
  • Keeping abreast of changes in industry requirements/training.
  • Maintaining training in, and following, company procedures relevant to their duties.
  • Other tasks as required by the Company’s senior management.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential Attributes:

  • Excellent analytical, research & innovation skills.
  • Background in research chemistry/biochemistry/biomaterials, ideally materials or protein chemistry.
  • Good literature database research, review and critiquing capabilities
  • Excellent written and oral presentational skills.
  • Practical and ‘hands on’ laboratory skills.
  • Good interpersonal & influencing skills.
  • Confident when working independently.
  • Able to conceive & translate market driven ideas.
  • Plan relevant work/studies, analyse data, and prepare reports.
  • Ability to work within a small team.

Essential Skills/Experience:

  • Research materials/chemistry/biochemistry.
  • GMP and manufacturing environments.
  • ISO13485.
  • NPD process and design control requirements.
  • MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Technical problem solving
  • Independent materials/chemistry/biochemistry research.
  • Experience in medical device, pharmaceutical or similar controlled industry

Desirable Skills/experience:

  • Microsoft Project or equivalent Project Management software package.
  • Biomaterial science.
  • Protein chemistry.
  • Textile technology.
  • FDA QSR requirements.
  • CE Mark (European) requirements.


•      Technical Degree or equivalent qualifications (Essential).

•      PhD (Desirable).
