Role Overview: 
The Strain Development and Protein Engineering Team (SDPE) applies advanced molecular and biochemical methods in the pursuit of novel enzyme based technologies for the degradation of complex biomass substrates. The successful candidate will head up a team of molecular biologists expressing and characterising novel enzyme targets and will be expected to develop strategies to expand the enzymatic portfolio within the company.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to supervise advanced projects from initial enzyme discovery from environmental fungal isolates to eventual cloning, heterologous expression and characterisation of identified target genes/proteins. In addition, the successful candidate is expected to collaborate with and contribute to ongoing projects within the company and its development partners. To succeed within this role candidates must be creative, proactive and have a desire to initiate new projects and strategies.

Competencies to perform the role:
The Scientist role is required to have excellent organisation skills and carry out their assigned tasks according to recognized standards and deadlines. The FRT is expected to juggle with several tasks effectively and efficiently. The Scientist will be part of the Strain Development & Protein Engineering Team and is expected to communicate effectively with other members of the team and other members of the company. This communication must be done with integrity and respect and according to the company general code of conduct. The Scientist must conduct research according to the general principles of good research based on honesty, cooperation and responsibility on accurate data acquisition and storage and managing appropriately any conflicts of interest. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Apply bioinformatic and molecular biology expertise to discover, express, and study enzymes and libraries of enzymes.
  • Collate and critique data generated within the SDPE team and present assessed data to management and fellow Principal Scientists on a regular basis.
  • Work closely with Fermentation, Analytical, and Application team members to maintain high quality scientific processes, integrate results and troubleshoot new enzyme assessment.
  • Provide molecular biology and bioinformatic perspectives and intellectual support to projects.

Experience and Qualifications
Essential Skills:

  • A MSc or PhD in a Life Sciences discipline, with a strong focus on molecular biology and training in bioinformatics and enzymology with a record of research based experience over, > 8 years for MS and > 3-5 years for PhD either in an industrial or an academic environment.
  • Experience in modern molecular biology techniques and heterologous protein expression; experience in expression in industrial relevant organisms is essential.
  • Knowledge of methods for screening environmental isolates for proteins of interests.
  • Good understanding of biological pathways relating to carbon metabolism

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience in cultivation and genetic modification of filamentous fungi
  • Familiarity with high throughput molecular biology and high throughput protein expression/characterisation technologies.
  • Experience in translation of bioinformatic data into laboratory enzyme characterisation methods.
  • Functional understanding of protein mass spectrometry methods.
  • Knowledge of CaZy enzymes and associated enzyme families.
  • Small scale and microtitre plate scale protein expression methods.
