The job market can be split into two main areas. The 'open' or 'uncovered' job market, and the 'hidden' or 'closed' job market. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, so increase your chances of success by applying through both areas.

1. Job boards (e.g. PharmiWeb)

An example of the open market, job boards are postings external to the company, where the general public is able to view multiple listings, using key words to narrow down search returns. An advantage of using a job board is that you are able to compare a number of jobs in an instant, shortlist jobs you might like to apply for, and in some cases apply straight away. Job boards are a popular place to look for work, and roughly only five percent of job seekers are successful through job sites. However, don’t let this statistic deter you. In order to increase your chances of becoming one of the successful ones, you need to tailor your CV to suit key word scans. Think about what key words you used to search for that job, and ensure that those skills are written out specifically.
 

2. Job postings on the company's public website

Generally jobs posted directly to the public are either because a company has looked internally and has not been able to find anyone suitable or they are looking specifically to bring in external experience and expertise. This way of searching is effective if you have a general idea of which company you would like to work for.

Many websites have a tab called "Careers" or "Careers with Us" either at the very top or bottom of their home page which will be your first point of call.

3. Reach out to networks

The saying, "It's not what you know, it's who you know" is most certainly applicable for job hunting. The hidden job market comprises of all positions that are made known only to those working internally, and positions companies didn't even know they wanted, until you came along and pitched a position it to them. Make sure everyone and anyone knows that you're looking, and what you're looking for.

Reach out to your networks, use LinkedIn and don't be afraid to make new connections. Referrals, or 'warm leads' are a great way to get to know the company informally and find out if there are any positions that are available. Many companies offer bonuses for a successful referrals and a referred employee tends to have a lower turnover, so it’s a win-win for everyone.

If you know what your dream job is, but don’t know anyone in the industry – then by all means, do a bit of googling, find contact details and ask to have a conversation.
 

4. Create your own job



A linear CV looks great, but not everyone takes logical steps in their career. Creating your own job is a great way to show initiative, courage and have a go at making money where there wasn’t any before.

There are still many gaps in the market, and with enough conversations and bravery then creating your own job can essentially create stepping stones to your end goal.
