The Pharmaceutical Research
& Development (PR&D) team plays a vital role in the commercial
development of the Company's new products.
The UK team based at Hoddesdon is one of three PR&D groups world-wide.
It is a multi-disciplinary group, working closely with Merck
Research Laboratories' scientists world-wide and with global
medical, manufacturing and marketing teams. Its primary function
is to develop potential drugs from the basic research stage into
a marketable product. The major issues in the development phase
are:
- Evaluating potential drug candidates to select
the optimal form for development
- Design of formulations to maximise safety and
efficacy of our medicines
- Planning and provision of medicines for clinical
trials
- Quality and analytical control of the final
products to meet regulatory standards
The UK group comprises the following
departments:
Analytical Development
& Control, Administration Group,
Clinical Supplies, Formulation
and Process Design, PR&D Automation,
Quality Assurance, and Facilities
Management and Validation.
The team encompasses a wide range of scientific disciplines including
material science, physical organic and analytical chemistry, chemical
engineering, mechanical engineering, pharmacy, pharmacokinetics,
logistics, supply chain management, computer applications and automation
