| Tevadaptor - for safe handling of hazardous drugs | TEVA Hospitals announces the launch of Tevadaptor (12th May 2006), a system for safe compounding and administration of hazardous IV drugs. The Tevadaptor system combines the safety of a closed, needle-free system with superb ease of use.
Cytotoxics, but also other drugs.
The potential risks of exposure to cytotoxic drugs appear to be well recognized, and a number of other drugs are also identified as risky. In a recent Alert issued by the US NIOSH, antivirals and hormones were also identified as potentially hazardous.
But what about antibiotics? The number of IV antibiotic doses administered every day is probably a factor 5 to 10 larger than that of cytotoxics, and the amount of drug per dose is often in the order of grams rather than milligrams. The increased awareness of the potential risks (including building resistance) of exposure to antibiotics warrants reviewing the procedures for handling these drugs. We need to protect the people who care for us and our families daily the best we can.
