Job Summary:

The successful individual will provide overall leadership and strategic planning for Chiltern a Covance company. The Chiltern business model focuses on a distinct and highly customized offering to our clients (designed around you).


It includes a bespoke sales process, dedicated and experienced project managers, executive advocacy and advanced collaboration technology, further customized by attentive, personalized experience. Through this offering, clients will benefit from our deep therapeutic expertise and extensive clinical trial management experience in the emerging pharma and biotech space.

The ED is an experienced leader, preferably within the Oncology space. You will leverage that experience to grow a portfolio of innovative and profitable business, oversee the design of effective and differentiated strategies for operational delivery and build strategic relationships with clients and internal experts.

As such the ED is expected to develop relationships with our high touch approach and be a recognized as a leader within Labcorp/Covance/Chiltern.  

The ED will form and promote close working relationships with all Centers of Operational Excellence and other specialist groups contributing to portfolio growth, operational delivery, financial management and client satisfaction.

The ED will have full oversight of Strategy & Planning for this business unit, and resources to support the Department’s operational objectives and strategic priorities.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Develop and continuously maintain the highest functional expertise
  • Work in parallel with Business Development to win new business and provide an executive leadership support to our client.
  • Oversight for budgetary and financial performance within Chiltern a Covance Company. Accountability for global P&L for Chiltern a Covance Company as delivered through the CoE  (revenue, margin, budget, forecasting, write-offs, fixed-price gains)
  • Ensure the development and execution of best practices and overall corporate objectives aligned with brand strategy
  • Provide oversight and ensure delivery to contract, quality, budget and client satisfaction
  • Responsible for the selection, training, development, and performance management for Line Managers and Directors
  • Grow the TA portfolio in collaboration with Business Development
  • Develop and retain TA experts within the business
  • Influence cross-functional teams to ensure that client objectives are effectively supported
  • Act as a subject matter expert in relevant process improvement and change management activities
  • Initiate, support, and actively participate in advisory boards, speaker development programs, and other professional organizations


  • Previous experience of leading a Global functional Clinical Development Group within a client-facing environment.
  • A strong business leader, confident liaising at c-suite level.
  • Previous experience in Strategy leadership for Project Management, Clinical Operations and supporting CRO groups.
  • A deep understanding of Oncology Clinical Development
  • Extensive drug development and clinical research experience (pharmaceutical, biotech or CRO), leading PII-PIV clinical trials in respective Therapeutic Area
  • A recognised global leader, ideally in a complex, virtual and matrix environment leading large multi-functional teams
  • Broader level client relationships and business development experience
  • Demonstrated vision, strategy and growth experience
  • Financial acumen (P&L, budget, forecast, resources etc.)
