STONEHAM and WOBURN, Mass., Sept. 20, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Nilesh M. Sheth, owner and principal refractive surgeon at the Sheth-Horsley Eye Center and Avant LASIK Spa, has successfully performed the first KAMRA inlay procedure in Massachusetts. The safe, surgical procedure treats presbyopia, a condition whereby individuals over 45 years of age naturally experience near vision loss. Presbyopia will affect 2.1 billion people by 2020.1

"If you are over 40 and have ever struggled with reading text messages, seeing the dashboard of a car clearly, or being able to read a menu in a restaurant, then the KAMRA inlay may be a solution to help you enjoy life without reading glasses," says Nilesh M. Sheth, MD, MPH.

Having performed more than 13,000 laser vision correction procedures, Dr. Sheth is a highly skilled and respected surgeon at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, a teaching hospital of the Harvard Medical School, and is considered to be a leader in the field of refractive eye surgery.

How KAMRA Works
During the 20-minute procedure, a mini-ring smaller and thinner than a contact lens is inserted under the surface of the cornea over the pupil. The ring directs light through the narrow opening, and focuses it precisely on the retina for clear near vision. No stitches are required, and the patient is treated with prescription drops to aid in healing.

Who should consider KAMRA?
The ideal patient for the KAMRA inlay are adults between 45 and 60 who have near vision loss due to presbyopia, the eye's inability to focus that naturally occurs and eventually happens to everyone.
