POMONA, Calif., Aug. 2, 2017

POMONA, Calif., Aug. 2, 2017 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Casa Colina Hospital and Centers for Healthcare is pleased to announce its 22nd Land Meets Sea Sports Camp, which will be held August 8–10, 2017, in Long Beach at Marine Stadium and other sites in the area. For more than 30 years, the Casa Colina Outdoor Adventures program has provided therapeutic outdoor experiences to thousands of people with disabilities and special needs, each featuring staff comprised of Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists along with trained volunteers ensuring the highest level of safety for all participants.

The Land Meets Sea Sports Camp features adaptive water, land, recreation and competitive sports. People with varying abilities will have the opportunity to participate in numerous sports activities, including adaptive rock climbing, hand cycling, jet skiing, water skiing, outrigger canoeing and sailing. Wheelchair sports include quad rugby, hockey, basketball and tennis. The program allows first-time campers to try new sports while those returning can participate in activities that they have enjoyed for many years.

"The Land Meets Sea Sports Camp is truly one of a kind," said Tommy Hollenstein, a participant of last year's program. Hollenstein is paralyzed and wheelchair-bound due to a spinal cord injury from a biking accident nearly 30 years ago. "It is a great place for a newly injured person or person with a long-time disability to try out a variety of sports and feel 100 percent safe. For me, waterskiing is a thrill of a lifetime," he added.

One of the most unique aspects of the Land Meets Sea Sports Camp is the diversity of people who attend. Each year, the camp draws participants from children to adults with a wide range of disabilities. Beginners as well as those with experience are made to feel welcome and capable as they try challenging recreational activities.  The program attracts participants from all over Southern California, including Irvine, Claremont, La Verne, Altadena, Canoga Park, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Huntington Beach, Oxnard, Whittier, Torrance, Ventura, San Dimas, Glendora, Monrovia, Banning, Lakewood, Fontana, Redlands and more.

The Casa Colina Outdoor Adventures program focuses on abilities rather than disabilities to enable its members to experience success both physically and emotionally. This program utilizes the outdoors to create unique opportunities where people with disabilities can enjoy a sense of community, gain self-confidence and share new experiences with people of all abilities.

Last year's Land Meets Seas Sports Camp event attracted nearly 100 participants, adults and children, with the support of more than 60 dedicated volunteers from the surrounding community.

Sponsors include Coloplast, Rudolph and Daphne Munzer Foundation, Triumph Foundation, Lokahi Outrigger Canoe and David and Lisa Morony.

The fee for the three-day camp is $300, which includes participation in all events, lunch, a goodie bag and a t-shirt. For more information about attending the camp, sponsorship opportunities or to offer assistance as a volunteer, please call Casa Colina's Outdoor Adventures staff at (909) 596-7733, Ext. 4131 or visit www.casacolina.org

About Casa Colina Hospital and Centers for Healthcare

Casa Colina Hospital and Centers for Healthcare was founded in 1936 in Chino, Calif., under the leadership of Frances Eleanor "Mother" Smith and other community leaders and physicians to provide rehabilitative care to children with polio. In the early 1950s, when polio was at epidemic proportions, a plan was developed to build a new hospital in nearby Pomona, Calif. In 1959, the new hospital was completed, and Casa Colina expanded its physical rehabilitation services to concentrate on treating people of all ages and disabilities resulting from neurological and/or orthopedic conditions. In recent years, Casa Colina has renovated its entire 20-acre Pomona campus to build a continuum of rehabilitative care unmatched in the Western United States. Casa Colina was recognized by Modern Healthcare in 2015 as the 13th largest rehabilitation provider in the country.
