Canadian Non-profit Delivers Cost-Effective Medical Aid to India-Burmese Refugees

Posted on: 14 Aug 17

CALGARY, Alberta, Aug. 14, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Medical Mercy Canada (MMC) confirms the continued support and medical aid for displaced refugees along the India-Myanmar border. For over 15 years, the organization’s project team has supported two separate on-site medical clinics that now treat 13,000 patients annually at a cost of only $3 per patient. The team has optimized the cost effectiveness of assisting refugees in place, and is currently fundraising in order to sustain aid for another year.

“The situation over there is exceptionally dire. It’s an area where thousands of displaced people have fallen through the political cracks,” stated Neil Samis, co-lead for the volunteer-run project. “As long as we can raise the funds, we will keep contributing our time and effort to help those in desperate need.”

The MMC team, led by Samis and his wife, assist the Burmese/Myanmese Chin people forced out of their countries. With qualified local doctors, nurses, support staff as well as Canadian volunteers, the team provides daily care that would otherwise be unattainable in this extremely remote land.

“There are no other medical services available to these people,” explained Samis. “The staff manages everything from broken limbs and burns to surgeries, diseases and life-threatening traumas in these very simple facilities.”

Medical Mercy Canada pays for all the staffing salaries, building maintenance, rent and medicine required. With an annual budget of $35,000 CDN, MMC fundraises annually to keep the operation running. Donations may be made at Canada Helps:

“Basically, we bring help and hope to those who would be otherwise forgotten,” emphasized Samis.  “We take personal pride in being Canadian and in having the ability to do what we can to improve lives.”
