The rotator cuff repair market can be segmented by material type, yielding five segments: PLA resorbable anchors, biocomposite anchors, polyetheretherketone (PEEK) anchors, metal anchors and all-suture anchors. PLA and biocomposite products are classified as resorbable suture anchors, while PEEK, metal and all-suture anchors are classified under the non-resorbable category. Contrasting the market breakdown in the United States, the European market continues to demonstrate a strong penetration of non-resorbable anchors. It is expected that non-resorbable anchors will maintain their dominance over the forecast period, despite the growing share of biocomposite products.

The rotator cuff is a combination of four muscles and their tendons that cover the head of the humerus. These include the supraspinatus, the infraspinatus, the teres minor and subscapularis muscles. These muscles stabilize the ball of the shoulder within the joint and enable the arm to lift and rotate. The shoulder joint allows for a great range of motion, but at the expense of stability, as it is not directly attached to the axial skeleton in the way that the lower limbs are.
