Working collaboratively, the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress (F4CP), a leading voice of the chiropractic profession and the Pain Action Alliance to Implement a National Strategy (PAINS), an organization working toward improving chronic pain as a public health priority, are raising awareness of chiropractic care as an essential element of comprehensive/integrative chronic pain care which will improve the lives of millions of Americans, save billions of dollars and reduce opioid prescribing. The United States is facing two major public health issues: pain and opioid misuse. Both are challenging, and chiropractic care is important in resolving them.

Myra Christopher, director, PAINS, says, “I am enthusiastic about collaborating with the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress to promote September as Drug-Free Pain Management Awareness Month and to advocate for comprehensive/integrative chronic pain care. Chronic pain is a complex neurologic disease which requires a comprehensive approach. Various studies indicate that spinal manipulation can be an important strategy for chronic pain sufferers – particularly for those with lower back pain.”

According to the Wall Street Journal, doctors of chiropractic (DCs) perform 94 percent of all spinal manipulations in the United States. Additionally, an earlier BMC Musculoskeletal Disordersstudy on upper cervical chiropractic care for neck pain, headache, mid-back and low back pain concludes that 9.1 out of 10 patients indicated a very high level of patient satisfaction.

Sherry McAllister, DC, executive vice president, F4CP, says, “This alignment between the Foundation and PAINS furthers our joint commitment to educate, engage and advocate for the millions of Americans who have chronic pain. We share a goal to reframe the current drug-based dialogue on pain management and accurately articulate the relationship to the opioid epidemic.”
