WASHINGTON, Sept. 18, 2017

WASHINGTON, Sept. 18, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- GMO Answers today previews its annual "Get to Know GMOs Month" with the launch of an online video submission contest. The GMO Innovation Contest is designed to encourage anyone to "Get to Know GMOs" by showcasing real-world problems facing our food supply and food production system that could be solved using GMOs and biotechnology though an interactive and visual online platform.

The contest challenges consumers to submit a 15- to 30-second video that answers the question, "If you could use biotechnology to solve any food problem around the world, what would it be and why?" Submissions will be accepted now through Oct. 23. The top three videos will win up to $500 in Amazon spending and will be announced at the end of October as part of Get to Know GMOs Month.

Since 2013, GMO Answers has been committed to answering consumers' questions about genetically modified foods. As scientific developments in biotechnology continue to advance rapidly, Get to Know GMOs Month each October is part of our goal to encourage conversations about these advancements and how they affect consumers. This year, we decided to kick off the annual campaign early with the GMO Innovation Contest, designed to encourage anyone to talk about GMOs and their future applications.

"This year, GMO Answers is taking Get to Know GMOs Month a step further to bring everyone concerned about the challenges facing our food supply into the conversation about the innovation and future of GMOs and biotechnology," said Michael Stebbins, Director of External Engagement for the Council for Biotechnology Information and GMO Answers spokesperson. "The interactive nature of the Innovation Contest allows us to harness the power of the broader community to spark conversations about how this technology can be applied to address global problems related to food and food production."

Innovations in biotechnology have already proven beneficial to our food supply and the environment. Today, modern farmers use innovative technologies that help to maximize resources, reduce food waste and improve nutrition around the world.

"These innovations fueling modern agriculture will continue to help farmers meet the needs of a growing population, alleviate global hunger and health issues, and address today's changing environmental challenges," said Stebbins. "As we look towards the future, GMO Answers will continue to encourage consumers to discuss these challenges and the part biotechnology can play in finding solutions. The Innovation Contest is designed to start the conversation in a new way."
