FDB Demonstrates How Consumer-Directed Healthcare Exchange Gives Patients Control of Their Own Health Information

FDB (First Databank, Inc.), the leading provider of drug and medical device knowledge that helps healthcare professionals make precise decisions, successfully demonstrated a way for consumers to view, update and share their medication information from within FDB’s Meducation® solution, normally only available to providers, right from their smartphone or other devices. The demonstration took place during the Interoperability Revisited presentation at the Health 2.0 Conference.

Historically, interoperability has focused on provider-centric data exchange. Consumer-directed exchange (CDEx) represents a new paradigm emerging giving consumers the right to access their own electronic heath care information. SMART on FHIR is the standard by which EHRs and other healthcare applications interface. CDEx leverages this interoperability to give patients direct access and control of their own health information.

During the demonstration, Meducation – a cloud-based solution that delivers simplified medication instructions for patients, especially those considered “high risk” due to low health literacy, poor vision or language barriers, was accessed by a patient using a smartphone app. Through CDEx, the patient provided simple, secure electronic permission for their healthcare provider to share the EMR content with the smartphone app. The demonstration’s goal was to show the potential of patient-empowered information sharing capabilities, that benefit consumers and the many organizations which serve their health and wellness needs.

“Today, patients can only access their medical data through their healthcare providers’ patient portal or through an onerous paper permission process to request their healthcare provider to release their medical records,” commented Lori McLean, vice president, Meducation, FDB. “We are thrilled for Meducation to demonstrate how patients will be able to easily access and take control of their healthcare data and be able to download, update and, most importantly, share this information as they choose.”

Meducation integrates with a variety of major information system vendors and the medication instructions are available within the clinical workflow. It has been licensed to hospitals, health systems, clinics and pharmacies across the United States.
