Press Release

Expert Panel to Discuss the National Opioid Emergency and Need for Medication Assisted Treatment

Advocates for Opioid Recovery
Posted on: 07 Nov 17

President Trump declared the opioid epidemic a national public health emergency, with more than 175 American lives lost daily to opioid overdose. Fewer than 3 percent of Americans living with opioid addiction receive medication assisted treatment (MAT), the most effective long-term recovery solution. With recent release of the President’s Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis’ final report, now is the time to lower the barriers to effective, lifesaving treatments.

This event will discuss the role of MAT in addressing the opioid crisis, the White House Opioid Commission’s related recommendations, and Congress’ role in making MAT the most common practice for opioid addiction treatment, particularly in Medicare and other government sponsored healthcare plans.

PANELISTS INCLUDE:

  • Former Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy, AOR Advisor, Member of the President’s Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis
  • Former Congresswoman Mary Bono, Co-Founder, Collaborative for Effective Prescription Opioid Policies (CEPOP)

  • Dr. Frances Levin, Past President of American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry; Kennedy-Leavy Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Columbia University; Chief of Substance Abuse Division at NY Presbyterian Hospital
