STAMFORD, Conn., Nov. 27, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The online, peer-review journal Blockchain in Healthcare Today is honored to welcome Dr. John D. Halamka, as Editor-in-Chief.  Dr. Halamka is the International Healthcare Innovation Professor at Harvard Medical School, Chief Information Officer of the Beth Israel Deaconess System, and a practicing emergency physician. He strives to improve healthcare quality, safety, and efficiency for patients, providers, and payers throughout the world using information technology.

"We are thrilled to have Dr. Halamka aboard," stated Tory Cenaj, founder and publisher of the journal. "We are poised at the foot of a precipice. Blockchain technology challenges us with an opportunity to remonstrate the inequality and inefficiency of legacy systems, frustrations on front lines honoring the Hippocratic Oath, and elevate care excellence, and the health and wellness of global health citizenry. This is a Renaissance - an awakening. The question is whether the ideals of those that forge an egalitarian system succumb to recreating a similar rewards system, on a different platform. I believe John understands this, and brings the virtuoso and impartiality of science and humanitarianism to Blockchain in Healthcare Today. This is a turning point for both healthcare, and civilization."

"I am excited Dr. Halamka has joined the BHTY team. His innovative thinking has already disrupted several fields. I have witnessed his unique talent as communicator teaching a biomedical computing class I co-directed.  He has novel ways of presenting new and complex concepts, staying relevant and exciting to audiences. As a nationally recognized innovator in the burgeoning blockchain space, he embodies the vision and energy required to move the sector forward. This is an ideal fit for the journal and will, no doubt, leave a far reaching imprint," stated Gil Alterovitz, PhD, BHTY editorial board steward, and Faculty, Harvard Medical School.

Previously, Dr. Halamka was CEO of MA-SHARE (the Regional Health Information Organization), and Chair of the US Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP). He is the author of five books on technology-related issues, hundreds of articles, and thousands of posts on the popular Geekdoctor blog.

Dr. Halamka completed his undergraduate studies at Stanford University, where he received a degree in medical microbiology and a degree in public policy with a focus on technology issues. He entered medical school at the University of California, San Francisco and simultaneously pursued graduate work in bioengineering at the University of California, Berkeley focusing on technology issues in medicine. Dr. Halamka completed his residency at Harbor–UCLA Medical Center in the Department of Emergency Medicine.

While at Harbor-UCLA, he was instrumental in creating an online medical record, a quality control system, and several systems for medical education. At present, Dr. Halamka continues to integrate his knowledge of medicine and technology, focusing using the Internet to exchange clinical patient data. His research includes security / confidentiality issues, scalability issues, and implementation of standards for exchange of administrative and clinical information. In addition, he runs the organic Unity Farm, in Sherborn, Massachusetts, overseeing 30 acres of agriculture, animals, and cider/mead making.

We are most happy to welcome Dr. Halamka to Blockchain in Healthcare Today, and look forward to his stewardship.
