Bridging Clinical Collaborative Patient Advocacy Breakfast Fosters Solutions to Integrate Clinical Research Into Health Care

Posted on: 25 Jan 18

The Bridging Clinical Research & Clinical Health Care Collaborative, a strategic forum for clinical research and health care professionals to come together to bridge the gap between clinical research and health care, will host a patient advocacy breakfast April 5 in National Harbor, Md.

Organized by John Lewis, MA, independent consultant at Intersect Strategies, the patient advocacy breakfast will feature the following representatives:

  • Sarah Berk, MPH, associate director, research partnerships, The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research
  • Sabah Bhatnagar, program director, EveryLife Foundation for Rare Diseases
  • Keith Fargo, PhD, director of scientific programs and outreach, Alzheimer’s Association
  • Amy Miller, PhD, president and CEO, Society for Women's Health Research
  • Andrew Spiegel, JD, executive director, Global Colon Cancer Association and Global Pneumonia Prevention Coalition

“Advocacy groups know firsthand how important it is to integrate research into clinical care,” said Lewis. “By bringing these groups together with sponsors, researchers and others, we can share our insights — and perhaps even develop strategies — to make this integration a more standard practice. When this happens, patients and physicians are more involved and new treatments reach the market sooner, benefiting us all.”

Fostering the open exchange of ideas, the breakfast provides a unique opportunity to collaborate with thought leaders in small groups on issues around patient recruitment, patient-focused drug development and clinical trials as a health care option. Attendees may choose which organization they meet with.

“Clinical research is a key step on the path to developing new therapies and a cure for Parkinson’s disease, but many trials fail because of a lack of volunteers,” said Berk. “By engaging key stakeholders, including patients, physicians, scientists and regulatory authorities, we can overcome field-wide challenges, increase the flow of potential research participants into trials that need them, and speed urgently needed PD breakthroughs.”
