Posted on: 15 Feb 18

BIOTECanada, the national industry association representing biotechnology companies attended and congratulates the Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and the organizations leading the successful superclusters identified in today’s announcement. The industry is very supportive of all superclusters initiatives including plant-based proteins, digital technology in precision health, AI-powered supply chains, manufacturing and ocean economy. Importantly, all of these superclusters include elements of Canadian biotechnology innovation. The biotechnology ecosystem is one where due to its rich culture of scientific discovery and development, Canada has a networked ecosystem in every province, where small- and medium-sized biotech companies work with universities, research institutes, regulatory authorities and multinational corporations to bring their concepts to market.

“The world’s population is predicted to grow to almost 10 billion people by 2050. This means drastic global changes in human health, the environment, food security and economic fortunes have already started to impact our day to day lives for Canadians,” commented Andrew Casey, President and CEO BIOTECanada. “The value of these superclusters will be in promoting research, creating high-quality jobs and economic advances when industry will work with numerous partners. The recognition from the Federal Government is encouraging to Canadian biotech companies who are bringing innovations to agriculture, creating new sources of energy and industrial applications, and reducing the environmental footprint of existing manufacturing and industrial processes. This sustainable intensification enhances the competitiveness of traditional Canadian industries, such as mining, farming, forestry and oil and gas, thus protecting jobs in these cornerstone parts of the Canadian economy.”

BIOTECanada is the national industry association with more than 200 members located nationwide, reflecting the diverse nature of Canada’s health, industrial and agricultural biotechnology sectors. In addition to providing significant health benefits for Canadians, the biotechnology industry has quickly become an essential part of the transformation of many traditional cornerstones of the Canadian economy including manufacturing, automotive, energy, aerospace and forestry industries.
