BROOKFIELD, Wis., March 20, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- To help Registered Dietitians (RD) and Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDN) prepare for board certification in wound care, Wound Care Education Institute (WCEI) has launched a tailored Skin and Wound Management course suited for the RD and RDN. The course reinforces knowledge with real-world, practical skin and wound management training while preparing the RD and RDN for the Nutrition Wound Care Certified (NWCC) certification.

"The course addresses the need for nutritionists on the wound care team and can help an RD or RDN become a nutrition wound care expert," said WCEI Co-Founder/Clinical Instructor Nancy Morgan, RN, BSN, MBA, WOC, WCC, DWC, OMS.

Poor nutrition can have a substantial negative effect on the ability to build new tissue and defend against infection. A patient's nutritional needs can change in the presence of wounds reinforcing the body's requirement for a proper mix of both macro and micronutrients during wound healing. Patients with chronic and non-healing wounds often have special nutrient needs as well as other healing obstacles at play.

"To manage these situations, it becomes apparent that an RD or RDN is a vital member of the multidisciplinary wound care team," Morgan explained. "The NWCC certification through the National Alliance of Wound Care and Ostomy is a one of a kind certification and sets a new standard for the RD and RDN."

The Commission on Dietetic Registration has approved the Skin and Wound Management course for 24.0 Continuing Professional Education (CPE) hours. The course is available onsite in over 60 nationwide locations during 2018. The course is also available in an online format.
