The second annual HPV Prevention Week takes place October 1-7

OTTAWA, Sept. 27, 2018 /CNW/ - On Monday, October 1st, the second-annual HPV Prevention Week will kick off with a reception in Ottawa for government officials and media in Room 330 of the Wellington Building, 180 Wellington Street (guests can enter the building at 197 Sparks Street). HPV Prevention Week is a weeklong public awareness campaign designed to educate Canadians about HPV Prevention. The reception will feature remarks from Dr. Vivien Brown, chair of the HPV Prevention Week for the Federation of Medical Women of Canada (FMWC), Dr. Jennifer Blake, Chief Executive Officer, Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC), Hon. Peter Kent along with Liz Ellwood, Founder of national charity Fertile Future and Co-Founder of Fertility Match Canada. Ms. Ellwood is also a 10 year survivor of an aggressive form of cervical cancer, caused by an HPV infection.

Dr. Brown, Dr. Blake and Ms. Ellwood will be available for interviews following the program. They can offer insights into how this campaign came to be and why HPV Prevention is a critical issue that can affect women and men across Canada.

Also launching on October 1st is the Take Shots Against HPV social media challenge – challenging Canadians to grab a hockey stick and a puck and upload a video of themselves taking a slapshot using #CANADAvsHPV. Hockey nets will be set up on Parliament Hill from 8:30AM – 2PM on October 1st and media are invited to join the challenge by taking their shot. Additional info is available on our website at www.canadavshpv.ca.

Due to security considerations at 180 Wellington Street, if you do not have credentials for Parliament Hill and would like to cover this event please email hpv.pw.group@fhhighroad.com by 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 30 to confirm attendance.

HPV Prevention week aims to foster awareness about the human papillomavirus (HPV), empowering men and women across the country to learn how they can help protect themselves against HPV and HPV-related cancers and diseases.

HPV is responsible for almost all cases of cervical cancer, but it can also lead to anal cancer, vaginal and vulvar cancers, penile cancers and mouth and throat cancers.i  HPV is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections in Canada and around the world. It is estimated that as many as 75% of sexually active Canadians will be infected with HPV at some point in their lives, and approximately 3,500 Canadians – 1/3 of them males – were diagnosed with HPV-related cancers in 2012.ii With proper screenings and vaccination, some HPV infections and HPV-related cancers and diseases can be prevented.

HPV Prevention Week is a collaboration between the Federation of Medical Women of Canada (FMWC) and the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) with support from Merck Canada.
