LOS ANGELES, Oct. 15, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- For the first time in U.S. history, a patient's motion has been nearly fully restored, thanks to a new spinal procedure that removes a spine patient's prior fusion in their neck, replacing it with an artificial disc.

The procedure was introduced by Dr. Todd Lanman, one of the world's chief spinal neurosurgeons, and performed on a female golfer from Texas with three fused discs in her neck. Following the procedure, the patient's motion was almost completely restored, allowing her to once again continue golfing, something she had difficulty doing following her fusion surgery.

Lanman has since carried out this new surgical technique on nearly 10 other patients, including a 25-year-old wrestler from New England. Following his own experiences recovering from restorative motion surgery, this patient went on to win his first gold medal, which he sent to Dr. Lanman with a heartfelt letter thanking him and letting him know it was due to Lanman's expertise and this new procedure that he was able to compete again, doing what he loves.

In every single case, the patient found their movement was returned to virtually its original levels prior to their fusions, allowing her to once again flex her head forward and back.

While this procedure is available to patients who have been qualified as candidates by Dr. Lanman and his team, it is important to note that it is still an off-label indication of the artificial disc and most insurance policies are currently not covering it.

Those who may be candidates for this procedure, Lanman explains, are those who have experienced prior fusion surgeries in their neck where the facet joints are still open on CT Scan.

However, two years following his initial restorative motion surgery, post-recovery patient outcomes have now consistently shown this procedure to be effective and statistically superior, giving patients the opportunity to regain an active and functional lifestyle with full or almost full mobility as they age.

He recently documented his findings in an article in Spinal News International, an outlet that is at the forefront of covering global news relating to spinal care and spine surgery: https://spinalnewsinternational.com/restorative-motion/

Dr. Lanman has become one of the world's leading innovators in spine surgery and motion preservation. In 2016, FDA approval was received on a new procedure he led as principal investigator following a 10-year clinical trial involving replacing two adjacent discs simultaneously with the help of a Prestige LP two-level artificial cervical disc device, demonstrating the surgery nationally for the first time on CBS' "The Doctors."

Founder of Beverly Hills-based practice Lanman Spinal Neurosurgery and an innovator and leader in spinal health and surgery for more than 25 years, Dr. Lanman was recently named one of Los Angeles' 'Top Doctors' in the Los Angeles Times, as well as took home the award as a 'Leader in Health Care' at the 2018 Los Angeles Business Journal Health Care Leadership Awards earlier this year.

Lanman's practice is affiliated with Cedars-Sinai Medical Center's Institute for Spinal Disorders and UCLA Medical Center Department of Neurosurgery.

He is a frequent media contributor and has published more than a dozen peer-reviewed clinical articles. His clients include many A-list celebrities from the worlds of music and film and television, as well as high-profile business executives from around the world. For more information on Dr. Todd H.
