MONTCLAIR, N.J., Oct. 18, 2018

MONTCLAIR, N.J., Oct. 18, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- PAINWeekEnd on November 3 at the Charleston Marriott, 170 Lockwood Blvd., in South Carolina, will be an educational and exciting program providing busy clinicians and allied healthcare practitioners with 6.0 hours of relevant, practical instruction in the management of chronic pain.

In June of this year, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster participated in a ceremonial signing of 9 new bills intended to combat the crisis of opioid misuse and abuse in the state. The action followed on McMaster's December 2017 declaration of a public health emergency tasking the Opioid Emergency Response Team with developing a comprehensive response plan. Among other provisions, the new legislation establishes a 7-day limit on initial opioid prescriptions for acute or post-operative pain and directs the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) to develop prescription report cards for practitioners. At PAINWeekEnd Charleston, Abigail Brooks, PharmD, BCPS, will be presenting Walking the Line: Opioid Dose De-Escalation, a discussion of different patient situations in which tapering or discontinuance of opioids may be appropriate. Dr. Brooks observed, "Now, more than ever, prescribers are under the microscope regarding selection of opioids and doses as well as clinical documentation and appropriate action based on findings during the patient visit. I look forward to sharing insights on when opioid tapering should be considered, and how to implement changes in opioid therapy." Dr. Brooks will additionally be considering issues of prescriber concern with the gabapentinoid class of medications in her course What's All the "GABA" About? Pregabalin and Gabapentin Abuse.

Other course topics to be offered at PAINWeekEnd Charleston include Pain Pathways Made Simple; The Regulatory Agency Will See You Now; Clinical Pearls: Unraveling the Secrets of Imaging Studies; and The Other Opioid Crisis: Fentanyl and Heroin. Commercially supported activities—addressing a range of product, disease state, and medical information topics—will also be presented.

For more information about this or other regional conferences, and to register for $129, go to the PAINWeekEnd website. BONUS: PAINWeekEnd registrants may register for the 2019 PAINWeek National Conference, September 3-7, in Las Vegas, for $200 off the regular online published price.
