Synergy Vision Implements Four-Day Week on Full Pay

Medical communications consultancy Synergy Vision is implementing a four-day working week without reducing pay, in an initiative thought to be the first of its kind in the UK healthcare communications sector.


The decision to launch the four-day initiative is part of Synergy Vision’s ongoing drive to set team-focused and forward-thinking working standards. It follows research identifying how benefits for staff and productivity have been achieved in other industries [i],[ii],[iii].  Through the initiative, Synergy Vision will also explore if they can reduce an already-low use of freelancers, countering the industry-wide epidemic of staff leaving the payroll to achieve more flexible working.

“When Henry Ford reduced the working week from six to five days because of improved productivity due to automation, everyone thought he was mad. Now, parallels in efficiencies afforded to us by technology mean it is time for a quantum leap in our industry. Happy, fulfilled teams do better work. It’s a ‘win-win’ situation and we hope to set standards that the rest of the industry will want to follow,” Dawber explains.


The four-day week launches at Synergy Vision in December 2018. All staff will work 36 hours over four days, compared to 40 hours previously, for the same salary and holiday allowance. Individuals will usually have the same day off weekly, facilitating workload planning.


As part of the initiative, employees’ happiness and satisfaction are being measured throughout the six-month trial period, to evaluate the impact of the new policy on work/life balance.
