Synergy Vision Implements Four-Day Week on Full Pay

Synergy Vision
Posted on: 09 Nov 18

Medical communications consultancy Synergy Vision is implementing a four-day working week without reducing pay, in an initiative thought to be the first of its kind in the UK healthcare communications sector.

The decision to launch the four-day initiative is part of Synergy Vision’s ongoing drive to set team-focused and forward-thinking working standards. It follows research identifying how benefits for staff and productivity have been achieved in other industries [i],[ii],[iii].  Through the initiative, Synergy Vision will also explore if they can reduce an already-low use of freelancers, countering the industry-wide epidemic of staff leaving the payroll to achieve more flexible working.

Comments Ffyona Dawber, CEO: “Synergy Vision’s ethos is founded on developing happy teams that we can respect and trust. This promotes excellence and stability in the workforce and helps us to deliver the difference for our clients.

“We have the vision, critical mass and determination to make a four-day week work and improve our employees’ work-life balance. Importantly, we think clients will benefit too, with longer working days increasing the time that teams are available. Individuals will have greater focus and productivity because their life ‘admin’ and leisure time can be planned into their fifth, ’free’ weekday.

“When Henry Ford reduced the working week from six to five days because of improved productivity due to automation, everyone thought he was mad. Now, parallels in efficiencies afforded to us by technology mean it is time for a quantum leap in our industry. Happy, fulfilled teams do better work. It’s a ‘win-win’ situation and we hope to set standards that the rest of the industry will want to follow,” Dawber explains.

The four-day week launches at Synergy Vision in December 2018. All staff will work 36 hours over four days, compared to 40 hours previously, for the same salary and holiday allowance. Individuals will usually have the same day off weekly, facilitating workload planning.

As part of the initiative, employees’ happiness and satisfaction are being measured throughout the six-month trial period, to evaluate the impact of the new policy on work/life balance.

Principal writer Alex Kroll has been at SV since 2011, having come from a medical publishing background. He explains: “I’ve always valued the way that Synergy Vision works to help us prioritise a positive work-life balance; in real terms, not just paying the concept lip-service. The 4-day week initiative is a further, very real step-up and I’m excited to see how it will benefit everyone in the team.”

About Synergy Vision

Synergy Vision was founded in 2007 by former nurse and pharmaceutical clinical development specialist Ffyona Dawber. She had identified a gap for a full-service medical communications agency that understands first-hand the challenges faced by pharmaceutical clients. As a result, many of the now 40-strong team are hand-picked for their industry experience, a significant track record in agencies, or academic expertise. A graduate trainee scheme launched in 2016.

Now in its 11th year, Synergy Vision’s global footprint has expanded, with offices in London, Dublin and Sydney. The agency prides itself on being the partner that clients can trust – striving to build lasting relationships by exceeding expectations, maintaining high levels of professionalism, and being honest and transparent every step of the way.

A raft of accolades going back to 2010 reflect the agency’s commitment to embedding a positive culture across all levels of the company, unwavering focus on nurturing the team, and exceeding client expectations. Synergy Vision first secured the core Investors in People (IIP) accreditation in 2011 and achieved gold status in 2017.

Additionally, in 2018, Synergy Vision was ranked 11th among hundreds of businesses entering the UK’s Best Workplaces: Small category (20–50 employees); secured a Gold Award for Skills Development at the International CSR Excellence Awards; and was a finalist in both the Medical Education Consultancy of the Year and Small Consultancy of the Year categories in the 21st Communiqué Awards. In 2017, Synergy Vision won the 14th Annual International Business Awards Gold Stevie® Award in the Customer Service Department of the Year – Advertising, Marketing, Public Relations & Business Services category. Previous recognition has also come from The Women of the Future Awards, the RX Club, PharmaTimes, C&IT Awards and Best Business Awards.
