In 2020, more than 89,000 individuals were employed by Massachusetts-based Life Science companies, representing a growth of over 67% in the last decade. The state is also widely regarded as the top biopharma cluster in the USA; thanks to its leading health systems, world-leading universities, state government support and robust venture capital pipeline.

Takeda Pharmaceuticals USA

Takeda is a global biopharmaceutical company and the largest Life Sciences employer in Massachusetts. In the USA, Takeda markets metabolic, gout, gastrointestinal, and central nervous system treatments, with Massachusetts also serving as the U.S. hub for numerous global business operations. These include the U.S. Commercial Business Unit, Global R&D, Global Oncology, Global Vaccines, Biologics Manufacturing and Cell Therapy Manufacturing.

In June 2022, the company announced that they had signed a 15-year lease for approximately 600,000 square feet of R&D and office space to be built in Kendall Square, Cambridge. The move will allow the company to be near top life science talent, enhance office collaboration and R&D space, and support scientific discovery.

Sanofi US

Sanofi is a global healthcare company striving to transform the practice of medicine. Headquartered in Bridgewater, New Jersey, Sanofi US employs more than 12,500 people across the country.

In June 2022, the company announced the opening of it’s new campus at Cambridge Crossing, designed to enhance collaboration between R&D, Medical, and the Speciality Care business unit, among others, ultimately accelerating the development of transformative treatments. The new campus is one of Sanofi’s largest US sites, consisting of two buildings totalling 900,000 square feet and with 2,500 employees expected to work there.

Vertex Pharmaceuticals

Vertex is a global biotechnology company investing in scientific innovation to create transformative medicines for serious diseases. In the US, the company has a headquarters and R&D site in Boston, MA, totalling 1.1 million square feet across two buildings.

In May 2022, Vertex announced their plan to build another 344,000 square foot facility. This will be located in the Seaport and will support the company’s continued growth, particularly with the expansion of its cell and genetic therapies programs. The project is currently expected to be finished in 2025 and, once completed, will mean Vertex will occupy 1.9 million square feet of real estate in the Seaport. This will make it the largest biotech in Boston in terms of square footage.

Pfizer

Pfizer is a global biopharmaceutical company applying science and global resources to bring therapies to people that extend and improve their lives. The company has a site in Cambridge, MA, which totals 280,000 square feet and brings together over 1,000 employees. Opened in 2014, the site is located in Kendall Square and features a state-of-the-art R&D hub, supporting several of the company’s functions including Pharmaceutical and Biotherapeutic/Biologics Research, Drug Metabolism, Biotechnology Units, Development and Medical, and Support Functions. These cover primary therapeutic areas including Inflammation & Immunology, Rare Diseases, and Internal Medicine.

Massachusetts is also home to Pfizer’s Andover research and manufacturing site and the global headquarters for the company’s Center for Therapeutic Innovation (CTI). The Andover site consists of 70-acres and combines R&D facilities with flexible, multi-product manufacturing capabilities. It was the first biotechnology facility in New England to receive OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) certification for its work in building a culture of safety.

Bristol Myers Squibb

Bristol Myers Squibb is a global biopharmaceutical company with a mission to discover, develop and deliver innovative medicines for patients with serious diseases. The company has been at the forefront of the scientific collective in Massachusetts for over 10 years, with R&D locations in Cambridge and Alewife, a biologics development and manufacturing site just outside of Boston, and a new R&D flagship currently under construction in Cambridge Crossing.

Kendall Square is home to the Mechanisms of Cancer Resistance Therapeutic Research Center, with Alewife being home to the Immunology Thematic Research Center. In 2023, these two sites will be combined into one building on the Cambridge Crossing campus covering 480,000 square feet and supporting more than 550 employees.

Moderna

Moderna is a biotechnology company pioneering messenger RNA therapeutics and vaccines. In May 2021, the company announced the expansion of the Moderna Technology Center (MTC) in Norwood, Massachusetts. The expansion involves more than doubling the space, transforming the facility into an industrial technology center.

The new space will increase Moderna’s production and lab space by around 350,000 square feet through renovating existing space and acquiring an extra 240,000 square foot building located on the same campus. In June 2021, Moderna reaffirmed its commitment to job creation in Massachusetts, highlighting how they had already nearly doubled the size of the company’s workforce between March 2020 and March 2021.

AstraZeneca

AstraZeneca is a global, science-led biopharmaceutical company with a focus on the discovery, development, and commercialisation of prescription medicines in the areas of Oncology, Rare Disease, and BioPharmaceuticals.

In April 2022, the company announced their plans to open a new site in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which will act as a strategic R&D centre as well as the new Alexion headquarters. Around 1,500 employees are expected to work in the new centre in Kendall Square once the project has been completed in 2026.

Charles River Laboratories

Charles River Laboratories provide products and services that help pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, government agencies and academic institutions across the world accelerate their research and development. The company currently has three sites in Massachusetts: Shrewsbury, Wilmington, and Worcester.

The Worcester site is focused on PK/PD and bioanalytical testing services for the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries and has around 150 employees working across 70,000 total square feet of laboratory, vivarium, and office space. The Shrewsbury site offers numerous drug discovery and biologics testing solutions, with service areas including Bioanalysis, Imaging, Clinical Support services, and more.

Charles River Laboratories announced in October 2021 the expansion of its Charles River Accelerator and Development Lab (CRADL) in Cambridge, MA, as well as the addition of a second Cambridge location on Bent Street.

Bayer

Bayer is a global pharmaceutical company with core competencies in Healthcare and Nutrition. In June 2022, the company announced the opening of its new R&D Innovation Center at Kendall Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts, representing a total $140M investment into the area. The new 62,100 square foot building is home to a new center for precision molecular oncology research with state-of-the-art laboratories, as well as offices for the development of novel targeted cancer therapies.
