MedImmune is the worldwide biologics research and development arm of AstraZeneca. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives every day. As one of the world’s premier biotechnology companies, our mission is centered on delivering life-changing products that advance world health, and help fight and cure disease.

We are seeking a highly motivated Lung Repair and Regeneration Senior Scientist with a broad understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying respiratory diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, particularly those driving tissue damage, remodelling and repair. As a member of the Respiratory, Autoimmunity and Inflammation (RIA) research group in Cambridge UK, you will work as part of a team discovering and developing novel therapeutics for the treatment of inflammatory diseases with a focus on respiratory diseases.

MedImmune has a dynamic environment that fosters collaboration and innovation. We attract top minds, and we nurture and build top talent.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

In this role, you will work as part of a preclinical team focused on expanding our portfolio of biologics drug projects for the treatment of respiratory, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. You will be expected to demonstrate an exceptionally high level of enthusiasm for innovative scientific research leading to the discovery and development of novel therapeutics. You will use your extensive expertise in tissue regeneration and repair, epithelial cell biology, stem cell biology, and/or complex co-culture systems, and will apply it to your understanding of the basic mechanisms of human lung disease, to develop novel therapeutics.

You will be responsible for driving target validation and drug projects through novel biological discovery. You will also develop and lead novel technical advances with human tissue such as complex 3D co-culture systems, imaging or similar, relevant to lung repair and regeneration . As part of your role you will be encouraged to collaborate with scientists from a variety of functional teams in Cambridge and with our site in Gaithersburg, USA. There is also the potential of having responsibility for 1-2 junior team members, for which you will need to be able to demonstrate a clear developing ability to mentor/inspire, develop and collaborate well with others.

* OR a strong understanding of lung developmental biology which can be applied to novel target discovery in disease.
* OR strong understanding and experience of stem cell biologics in relation to regeneration and repair.
* Scientific creativity and ability to drive own research ideas to a successful conclusion, demonstrated by strong publication record or project progression.
* Strong understanding of translation of mechanistic findings to human disease.

Desirable Requirements

* Experience of in vivo models of lung damage, chronic inflammation or infection of lung.
* Understanding of stem cell biology.
