Emerging Innovations Background

The Emerging Innovations unit (EIU) is a virtualised and externally focused R&D group within AstraZeneca that takes an entrepreneurial approach to delivering medicines to patients. This is primarily accomplished through pioneering ‘open innovation’ partnerships with external investigators (refer to: and internal drug repositioning. The EIU also identifies and then oversees the ‘incubation’ of novel technologies that may evolve into the next generation of approaches to discover and/or develop novel pharmaceuticals, or select the optimal patient populations for them.

Whilst many companies, including AstraZeneca, have chosen to focus in a small number of therapeutic areas, AstraZeneca remains interested in diseases that are adjacent to the core areas and, in special cases, so-called “white space” opportunities. This is in large part achieved by generating additional value for internal AZ assets via alternative indications in disease areas of high unmet medical need. This small, entrepreneurial group has the broad expertise necessary to evaluate new scientific opportunities and develop these opportunities through internal partnerships and an extensive network of strategic alliances and collaborations with academia, biotechs and CROs. The unit resides within the larger Scientific Partnering and Alliances research function.

Summary description

This position is responsible for identifying and championing the advancement of collaborative translational (preclinical ® clinical) research projects, often via external research collaborations. This position will be a key role for generation and validation of new projects, some of which may be internally derived through drug repositioning and many of which are through Open Innovation paradigms, in each case defining the plans for pre-clinical validation and translation to humans, and completion of the plans internally or externally.

Given the diversity of opportunities available to the group, a broad range of disease area expertise is desired, including but not limited to cardiovascular/renal, endocrine, oncology and neural systems. The optimal candidate will also possess experience across multiple stages and disciplines of pharmaceutical R&D, especially those related to translation of in vivo preclinical pharmacology into early clinical proof-of-concept. Primarily office-based, you will demonstrate expertise in your own scientific area via significant knowledge, peer-review publications in high impact journals, pharmaceutical project leadership and experience across other phases of the R&D process.

Job Purpose

* Identify new product opportunities from analysis of internal and external drug projects and via an externalised network of collaborations with e.g. CROs, academic labs and industrial partners.
* Develop and execute pre-clinical (including in vivo) validation project plans through internal or external resources, and support the development of clinical plans.
* Deliver quality decision points and risk mitigation required for project progression through pre-clinical and into early clinical development.
* Support the ongoing collaborations and any future AZ / academia Open innovation initiatives through review of proposals, development of full proposals with investigators, and collaborating with investigators on successful proposals.

* Additionally, for Associate Director role: aid the development and supervision of colleagues, including external collaborators, as may be needed


* Seek and apply best practices (internally and externally) in processes, data analysis, and decision-making in leading project teams in a virtual environment
* Implement and manage all aspects of external studies with CROs and investigators in support of portfolio projects (collaborating on experimental design, contracting, compliance, material transfers, etc)
* Ensure that IP assets of the project are developed, managed and protected
* Ensure, together with functional leaders and collaborators internally and externally, that the projects are appropriately resourced and ensure resources from functions are managed effectively
* Advise the unit on new core science and/or disease area opportunities within area of expertise both within and outside of existing group strategy
* Advise on the quality of biology from within or external to the organisation

* Evaluate and recommend and manage external collaborations, including externalised networks with CROs, academic labs and biotech companies, in order to identify and develop new product opportunities

* Contribute to and influence the strategic direction of own pre-clinical projects and initiatives
* Contribute to the overall success of the wider Strategic Partnering and Alliances and R&D functions

Minimum Requirements – Education and Experience

Functional Knowledge:

* PhD or MD in a relevant scientific discipline with experience within the pharmaceutical industry or related business
* Expertise in at least one disease area/physiological system required, including cardiovascular/renal, respiratory, oncology, endocrine and/or neural systems. Others will be considered.
* Expertise in leading and designing translational research projects (including in vivo experience)
* Desire and willingness to work beyond core disease area of expertise
* Excellent ability to form networks within and outside the company
* Expertise in sourcing, initiating and managing external collaborations
* Experience of decision making and leadership in a cross-disciplinary/functional, cross-cultural environment
* Excellent understanding of the drug discovery process and role of aligned functions
* Good communication and influencing skills
* Ability to multi-task (manage several projects concurrently) and prioritize projects as well as one’s own time
* Have a good understanding of how the drug discovery and development process functions.
* Have a detailed knowledge of factors leading to project attrition across discovery and development.
