AstraZeneca’s Centre for Genomics Research (CGR) is now looking for an experienced Bioinformatics Pipeline manager to support the Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) requirements of the CGR. This is an exciting opportunity to enable large-scale genomic studies among AstraZeneca’s core therapeutic areas of oncology, respiratory, cardiovascular and metabolic disease.



In this role, you will be responsible for coordinating and optimising the Centre’s Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) pipelines across High-Performance Computing (HPC) and cloud-based environments to handle the large-scale genomics strategies of the CGR in an unprecedented genomic initiative, involving the analysis of up to 2 million genomes. This role includes the optimisation of existing pipelines and scouting of opportunities for internal build and external open source and proprietary tools to maintain efficient and robust computational workflows.



The position will involve frequent scientific interaction with members of the CGR, the broader AstraZeneca Genome Initiative and our collaborative partners. The successful applicant will be part of a dynamic team in CGR’s multidisciplinary genomics research environment comprising of computational biologists, genome scientists, software engineers, statistical geneticists, postdoctoral researchers, disease area specialists and clinician experts. Bioinformaticians with excellent programming skills, experience working with genomics data and handling large data volumes in locally and cloud-deployed bioinformatics applications are highly encouraged to apply.



Responsibilities:

* Writing and optimising tools within the CGR’s bioinformatics analysis pipelines
* Automating bioinformatic pipeline processes to improve the efficiency of the Centre’s interactions with genomics data
* Assessing pipeline capabilities and future scalability needs; including the research and proposal of upgrades
* Troubleshoot bioinformatics pipeline component issues
* Follow the literature and explore novel bioinformatic technologies, tools and methodologies to add value to the CGR bioinformatics pipeline
* Maintaining a well-developed knowledge of bioinformatics best practices and technical advances in the international community
* Developing effective ways of displaying NGS data
* Ensuring own work, and work of team, is compliant with Good Laboratory Practice, Safety, Health and Environment standards and all other internal AstraZeneca standards and external regulations





Qualifications, Skills and Experience Required:



Essential:

* PhD degree (or equivalent experience) in a computational field of research, including but not limited to: bioinformatics, computer science, computational genomics or physics
* Experience implementing computational workflows for NGS data
* Extensive knowledge of state-of-the-art bioinformatics pipelines, with a desire to stay up-to-date on relevant literature
* Experience with version control systems like Git, subversion, other
* Experience with code debugging, profiling and optimization
* Ability to communicate effectively with team members and non-experts, both verbally and through documentation
* Ability to prioritize, problem-solve and perform difficult tasks while under pressure
* Ability to carry out duties under minimal supervision
* High level understanding or interest in the potential of genomics to impact drug discovery
* Excellent interpersonal skills and willingness to work within a team in a quickly evolving environment



Desirable:

* Previous experience in a similar role
* Experience adopting and developing data visualization tools
* Experience with cloud-based bioinformatics and parallel processing
* Knowledge of project management and software development life cycle
* Experience working with both germline and somatic variant calling tools
* Understanding of statistical packages such as R or matlab and database querying using R/Bioconductor and other open-source bioinformatics tools
* Familiarity with database architecture, distributed computing, and high-scale back-end services such as Amazon Web Service or Google Cloud Platform
* Track record of peer-reviewed publications in high-level scientific journals
* Familiarity working on genomics studies involving one of AstraZeneca’s core therapeutic areas
