The Manager, Project Support is responsible for the attraction, hiring, training, assessment & retention of the project management support team who are responsible for supporting the clinical trial project manager to deliver projects on time, on budget, and with the highest level of quality. Additional responsibilities include effectively managing resources, collaborating with  functional groups, and being an active participant in the implementation of new policies, procedures, and systems.



The Manager of Project Support:

  • Supports all aspects of line management supervision of Associate Managers and Project Support staff, including, but not limited to, performance management (quality, quantity, and timeliness of work performed), and guidance on corporate policy, training and support.
  • Ensures staff are working within budgeted hours on the study level.
  • Ensures staff are meeting departmental utilization targets.
  • Promotes a strong team approach to ensure project alignment through active collaboration and communication with project management and other departments.
  • Provides training by implementing effective orientation, mentoring, and career development programs for staff.
  • Provides knowledgeable, demonstrated leadership to staff.
  • Provides senior management with status reports (as requested).
  • Interacts with management where appropriate to resolve conflicts.
  • In conjunction with Quality Assurance, contributes to all aspects of audits as needed.
  • Reviews potential staff CVs and participates in the interview process.
  • Travels to regional office locations to provide support/orientation, training, and mentorship to new hires within the organization.
  • Leads regularly scheduled meetings with the Global Project Support staff via teleconference as a communication forum within the group.
  • Ensures timely and accurate timesheet and expense report completion.
  • Reviews training plans for timely and successful completion and documentation of job related / study specific trainings, SOPs/WGs/ADs, and external trainings (relevant to industry).
  • Performs additional duties and assignments as requested.



For Project Support Management Success:

  • Maintains overall awareness in the field of Clinical Research, as well as assigned therapeutic areas as appropriate.
  • Participates in the development, training and updating of clinical Standard Operating Procedures, Local Working Guidelines, and departmental policies (when requested).
  • Participates in quality improvement efforts to increase overall operational efficiency.
  • Participates in the mentoring and training of less experienced members of staff in other departments in addition to the Project Support Team.
  • Conducts performance reviews and talent assessments throughout the year to support professional development. 
  • Performs other work-related duties as requested.
  • Monitors and manages customer satisfaction as needed.
  • Acts as a resource for others and to seek opportunities to share knowledge.
  • Participates in corporate initiatives and actions that ensure the continued success of the company.
  • Other activities as designated.



  • Undergraduate degree or its international equivalent in business management, clinical, science, or health related field from an accredited institution or a licensed healthcare professional.
  • Previous experience in clinical research with established global experience in Project Support and/or Project Management.
  • Global experience with priority setting for all trial phases.  Prior experience in international project management is essential.
  • Prior line management experience preferred and/or mentoring of junior staff / study team members.
  • Project financial management experience.
  • Resource management experience.
  • Experience with process development, improvement, and implementation.
  • Experience in development and delivery of training materials and programs is required.

Expertise and Know-How 

  • Good knowledge of financial aspects of studies (i.e. budgets, forecasting, profit margins, change orders, etc.).
  • Firm understanding of key study deliverables and milestones across functional areas.
  • Knowledge and experience with FDA/ICH-GCP or ISO14155 regulations, drug or device development and clinical monitoring procedures are necessary. 
  • Requires highly effective presentation, documentation, interpersonal, decision making and leadership skills, as well as strong team-oriented approach. 
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks to meet deadlines in a dynamic environment is essential.
  • Strong understanding of Project Management terminology / methodology.
  • Strong computer skills are necessary. 
  • A willingness to travel, oral and written fluency in the English language is essential.
  • Demonstrated leadership and mentoring skills required.
  • Ability to effectively manage and motivate direct reports with project and people management responsibilities.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a project team.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, and interpersonal).
  • Detail-oriented and well organized, with highly developed problem-solving capabilities.
