The Development Scientist role primarily exists to develop new products and improve the formulations of existing products (food and pharmaceutical) ensuring Ernest Jackson & Co Ltd stays competitive in the markets we operate within.  Working as part of a small R&D team, the Development Scientist will undertake a number of concurrent and varied projects for both new formulations and product development as well as continuous improvement of existing products.

To be successful in the role, the Development Scientist will need to work closely with other departments and business functions; receiving ideas and suggestions and turning them into planned development activities.  The ideal candidate will be able to take ideas from initial concepts, develop formulations and recipes, undertake trials and ultimately provide input into the large scale manufacture of the finished product.  The candidate will be meticulous, thorough and systematic in their laboratory work activity, be able to undertake investigative work to resolve formulation problems and have the ability to present ideas and results logically and succinctly to a range of internal audiences providing suggestions and influencing future business activity.

A GMP background and working knowledge is desirable as well as knowledge of the regulatory landscape for food and pharmaceutical products.



  • Develop formulation of products new and existing from concept to finished product
  • Able to work to a brief and produce laboratory products to meet the requirements; including
    • Iterations of recipes & formulations
    • Production of lab samples
    • Undertake trials of samples, products and formulations
    • Investigation of issues/problems that occur within formulations and trials
    • Organise and execute plant scale prototypes
  • Working with project managers to assist the development of plans, timelines and subsequent reports for product development and launch.
  • Maintain awareness of materials under development and new market trends
  • Develop and use technical knowledge to influence the wider business

Based in Crediton, this role is commutable from Exeter, Okehampton, Taunton, Plymouth and Barnstaple.

Full Time 37.5hrs/wk. No shift Work.

  • BSc or equivalent in Chemistry or food/pharmaceutical subject
  • At least 18 months experience in a development environment assisting FMCG product development
  • Desirable = Supply Chain and Manufacturing knowledge/experience
  • Desirable = Knowledge of MHRA regulations governing the manufacture of pharmaceutical products and associated licences
