9 Point Pre-Interview Checklist

Posted on: 18 Feb 11

Summary

If you've got your self an interview for the perfect job - well done! Now comes the hard part, and you only get one chance. So, here's a simple check list of things that should help you keep your cool and allow you to concentrate on sailing through the interview

1. Research the company

know at least the basics about the company. Look at their website, see what the organisation's mission is, see the structure, what they do, what counties they operate in.

2. Know the role

Read the job advert until you know it off by heart. Make sure you understand what's expected in the role.

3. Know where you're going!

This sounds simple, but the company may have multiple offices, even in the same area. So, know which one you are going to! Print out a map. Drive there and locate the building if you can beforehand. This will reduce stress on the day.

4. Allow plenty of time

... not just getting there but, make sure you don't have an appointment straight afterwards. If the interview takes longer than you expect, you will get stressed if you are worried about another appointment.

5. Look at yourself in the mirror

Do this at home before you leave and if you have time, in the organisation before the interview. Check your appearance - you don't want to realise you have a bird deposit on your shoulder while you are in your interview.

6. Prepare your "Stock Answers"

Interviewers will almost without doubt have  "standard" questions (strengths / weaknesses / why are you leaving your current job etc) - so you need to have prepared answers for these.

7. Read your own CV

If like many people, you send different CV's to different job applications, make sure you know which one they have and read it. Take a copy with you too!

8. Have some questions ready

Inevitably there will be an opportunity to ask questions. Make sure you have a few ready.

9. Silence your phone!

The last thing you want is a call half way through the interview. So switch it off!
