Interview Nerves

Posted on: 14 Aug 13

Summary

Are you nervous about your pending interview? Here are a few preparation tips that might help put you at ease.

Know the Company

Do plenty of research on the company and jot down key facts. You need to know as much about them as possible. It also helps to be able to ask sensible questions about the company, and shows you've done your research

Know Your CV

This may sound stupid, but you need to know your CV inside out. if the interviewer asks a question about something on your CV, make sure you have the supporting knowledge and facts to back it up and expand on it.

Know where you're going

Be 100% sure about where you're going. If possible, do a dummy run. Know if they have parking or, if not, where you'll park. Remember large companies may have more than one building or even multiple locations in a city. Check the train station and times. Take a map, the address, and any contact details you might need.

Allow plenty of time

Getting to an interview late will stress you out. It also shows you are not organised.

Know who will be interviewing you

If you can, find out who will be conducting the interview, and do some research on them.

Know what you'll wear

Get it ready well in advance. Try not to wear anything brand new, as you may not feel so comfortable.

Rehearse

If you can, get a friend or relative to role play an interview situation with you, and get them to ask awkward questions.

Relax

If everything is ready, don't forget to get a good night's sleep, and have a decent breakfast!

Quite simply, being prepared will reduce the levels of anxiety that you might feel about the whole process, and the stress of interview itself. Being prepared will improve your interview chances no end, and don't forget, its quite OK to say you are feeling nervous if you are. Also, don't forget, the interviewer may be nervous too!
