PAINWeekEnd in Richmond, Virginia, Offers CE/CME Education to Aid the Opioid Abuse Public Health Crisis
MONTCLAIR, N.J., Oct. 9, 2018
MONTCLAIR, N.J., Oct. 9, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- PAINWeekEnd on October 27 at The Westin Richmond, 6631 W. Broad Street, in Virginia, will be an educational and exciting program providing busy clinicians and allied healthcare practitioners with 6.0 hours of relevant, practical instruction in the management of chronic pain.
Earlier this summer, the Virginia Board of Medicine adopted final regulations 18 VAC 85-21-10 et seq. that establish rules regarding the prescribing of opioids for pain treatment and of buprenorphine for addiction treatment. The final regulations became effective August 8, 2018 and replace the March 2017 emergency regulations. The rules establish new requirements for opioid prescribing for acute pain (pain lasting less than 3 months), for opioid therapy in the treatment of chronic pain, and for the prescribing of buprenorphine for the treatment of addiction. At PAINWeekEnd Richmond, Alexandra McPherson, PharmD, MPH, will be presenting 3's Company: COX-2 Inhibitors, Medicinal Marijuana, and Opioid Prescribing, an examination of the arguments attending appropriate opioid use, legalization of marijuana, and the safety of COX-2 inhibitors. Dr. McPherson observed "Opioids are effective analgesics for some people, but in light of the CDC guidelines, there is a growing need for nonopioid medications to treat pain. NSAIDs may be a reasonable alternative for some patients, and marijuana is becoming more widely accepted (and readily available) for clinical use. In all 3 cases, there are issues associated with strong positions, although the evidence, when put into practice, is less black and white. In this course, we will evaluate the current literature and the clinical, legal, and ethical controversies surrounding these approaches to pain management."
Other course topics to be offered at PAINWeekEnd Richmond include Pain Pathways Made Simple; Year of the Locusts: The CDC Guidelines Impact on Practitioners and Patients; Clinical Pearls: Unraveling the Secrets of Imaging Studies; Multidisciplinary Pain Management: Complex Cases; and Migraines A-Z.
Commercially supported activities—addressing a range of product, disease state, and medical information topics—will also be presented.
