LOS ANGELES, Oct. 15, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- For the first time in U.S. history, a patient's motion has been nearly fully restored, thanks to a new spinal procedure that removes a spine patient's prior fusion in their neck, replacing it with an artificial disc.

The procedure was introduced by Dr. Todd Lanman, one of the world's chief spinal neurosurgeons, and performed on a female golfer from Texas with three fused discs in her neck. Following the procedure, the patient's motion was almost completely restored, allowing her to once again continue golfing, something she had difficulty doing following her fusion surgery.

Lanman has since carried out this new surgical technique on nearly 10 other patients, including a 25-year-old wrestler from New England. While this procedure is available to patients who have been qualified as candidates by Dr. Lanman and his team, it is important to note that it is still an off-label indication of the artificial disc and most insurance policies are currently not covering it.

Those who may be candidates for this procedure, Lanman explains, are those who have experienced prior fusion surgeries in their neck where the facet joints are still open on CT Scan.

However, two years following his initial restorative motion surgery, post-recovery patient outcomes have now consistently shown this procedure to be effective and statistically superior, giving patients the opportunity to regain an active and functional lifestyle with full or almost full mobility as they age.
