SAN DIEGO, Nov. 1, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Sepsis Alliance, the leading sepsis organization in the United States, is pleased to announce it was named a recipient of a $60,000 grant from the Edwards Lifesciences Foundation. This grant will be used to support healthcare provider education of sepsis and to raise public awareness of this life-threatening condition that takes a life every two minutes.

Sepsis Alliance's 2018 Sepsis Awareness Survey revealed that sepsis awareness has reached a new high of 65% among U.S. adults. However, only 12% of adults know the most common symptoms of sepsis and just half strongly agree that you need to seek medical attention if you see signs of sepsis. With Edwards Lifesciences Foundation grant, Sepsis Alliance will continue public awareness campaigns such as It's About TIME™.

"Fifteen years ago, sepsis awareness was only at 19%, but with support from amazing partners like Edwards Lifesciences Foundation, we've been able to reach 65% - that's 156 million adults," said Thomas Heymann, President and Executive Director, Sepsis Alliance. "However, we still have a lot of work to do to increase awareness of sepsis symptoms. The Edwards Lifesciences Foundation grant will help us achieve this."

"Sepsis is a devastating yet preventable disease and the more we elevate awareness and share stories of success through the strength of Sepsis Alliance, the more lives we can save," said Amanda C. Fowler, Executive Director, Global Corporate Giving, Edwards Lifesciences and Edwards Lifesciences Foundation.

Sepsis Alliance created It's About TIME™, a national initiative, to help the public and healthcare professionals remember sepsis symptoms and the importance of seeking rapid treatment when they arise. T.I.M.E stands for:

  • Temperature – Higher or lower than normal
  • Infection – May have signs and symptoms of an infection
  • Mental decline – Confused, sleepy, difficult to rouse
  • Extremely ill – "I feel like I might die," severe pain or discomfort
