Day in the life of an emotive Art Director
Nairn, our Art Director, holds a degree in Graphic Design from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, University of Dundee. He joined emotive in 2013 as a Junior Designer and has been a part of the team for over six years.
What are you responsible for?
Creating designs that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Functionality is very important in design, especially the healthcare sector. That means that whatever I do, I always need to make sure that the final product is not only visually impactful but also has a strong rationale behind it.
Talk me through your typical day?
I usually get to the office at about 9am, review my to-do list, catch up on my emails and start the work scheduled for the day. At 10am I take a break and reward myself with tea and toast before getting back to my desk and cracking on with the rest of my day.
To be honest, I don’t think there is such thing as a ‘typical day’ in design. No day is like another and how my day plays out heavily depends on the project I’m working on – which can be anything from designing printed materials for a symposium to developing the look and feel for a brand. This diversity is one of the main things that I love about emotive – it never gets boring!
Describe a favourite project you’ve worked on.
I love branding-oriented projects, especially when I don’t have a predetermined style I have to follow. One of my favourites has to be when we worked on clinical trial branding for one of our clients. They asked us to develop the look and feel for the entire company’s clinical trial programme that could work across multiple therapy areas from scratch. We needed to make sure that whatever we came up with could be applied across different materials and platforms, including print, presentations and online. This was a challenging piece of work but it was so rewarding when we finally got there!
What do you love most about your job at emotive?
Again, it’s really the variety of the work. I love how every day brings a new challenge, so I never get tired or bored of the job. I also very much enjoy working with my colleagues in the agency – they are a great bunch, full of good, interesting and valuable ideas. Not to mention that working in healthcare brings the opportunity to change people’s lives for the better, which I am very happy and proud to be a part of.
What three words would you use to describe your job?
Considerate, rewarding and… emotive! (ugh can’t believe I actually said that!)
Who has been the most influential person in your life to date?
I would say my high school art teacher. I’ve made art my career and she wasn’t the last person to encourage me to do so.
What has been the most fun you’ve had during your time at emotive?
We did an escape room once as a team building exercise. The whole agency was split into teams of 5, all competing for who will escape the fastest… Some great organised, competitive fun!
What is your favourite sandwich?
The festive turkey one that Pret do for Christmas. Too bad it’s not going to be around for a while…
