“My first six months in medical communications” – views from Claire, an emotive graduate recruit

In September 2018, Claire joined emotive through the graduate recruitment scheme from the University of Bath. She has a BSc in Biology and a year’s experience working at ViiV Healthcare. Six months into her role, we asked Claire to tell us about her experience so far.

What do you like most about your role at emotive?

“For me it’s about the variety of accounts and therapy areas we get exposed to and the range of different projects within those accounts, from large congress events to animations. It’s also the team; everyone works really well together and it’s really enjoyable every day.”

What has been the most rewarding thing you’ve done since joining emotive?

“So far the most rewarding project for me has been a video we made for Medics4RareDisease. The client was so happy with it and smiling from ear to ear when it debuted it at their event. It will help raise awareness of rare diseases amongst medical students and doctors so it will have a really positive impact.”

What’s been the most fun you’ve had since joining emotive?

“The Christmas party was good fun and it was great for everyone to celebrate the success of the year and relax after a busy few months”.

Is there one thing that has surprised you about the world of med comms or agency life?

“What surprised me was the fast pace and the vast range of diseases (especially rare diseases) that we work on – a lot of which I wasn’t aware of before!”

Do you have any advice or comments to make to those who might want to get into medical communications?

“Do some research into the industry – it’s really great for people who have an interest in the scientific and medical world but who don’t want to work in a lab. Every day is different and there’s a lot of variety in the work so you won’t be bored!”

Our annual graduate recruitment scheme begins with a rotation around departments within the agency, culminating in a role in the Client Services or Medical teams. Look out for our Graduate Recruitment Day in 2019.
