Ambulatory Surgical Center Software Market To High Growth Opportunities, Emerging Trends, Market Review, Global Forecast 2027
Ambulatory Surgical Center Software Market: Rising Demand Driven by Shift to Outpatient Care
The global ambulatory surgical center (ASC) software market is expected to grow at a healthy rate of approximately 10% through 2027. Key growth drivers include the need to control rising healthcare costs, an increasing shift of surgical procedures to ambulatory settings, growing physician and patient preference for outpatient surgeries, and the introduction of advanced software solutions tailored for ASCs.

Ambulatory care refers to medical services delivered in outpatient settings without hospital admission. Ambulatory Surgical Centers (ASCs) specialize in providing same-day surgical care, including diagnostic and preventive procedures. These facilities have reshaped the outpatient care experience by offering a more convenient and cost-effective alternative to hospital-based outpatient departments. Common procedures performed at ASCs include cataract surgeries, gallbladder removals, tonsillectomies, endoscopy and colonoscopy procedures, orthopedic and arthroscopic surgeries, and certain cardiac interventions. Due to their operational efficiency, lower costs, and patient convenience, procedure volumes at ASCs continue to rise. Software solutions play a critical role in supporting these centers by streamlining daily operations and improving coordination of pre-operative and post-operative workflows.
Rising Investments Signal Strong Growth Potential for ASCs
The growing shift of surgical procedures away from hospitals has attracted significant investment from healthcare companies and private equity firms. Recognizing the strong growth prospects, investors have supported independent ASCs and driven consolidation into larger networks and chains. Major ASC operators in the U.S. include United Surgical Partners International (USPI), AmSurg, HCA, and Surgical Care Affiliates (now SCA Health). For instance, the number of ASCs operated by USPI increased from approximately 250 in 2015 to more than 465 today. Similarly, Surgical Care Affiliates expanded its footprint from around 185 facilities in 2015 to over 320 centers, underscoring the sector’s rapid expansion.

Product Innovation Remains a Key Focus for Market Players
Leading vendors in the ASC software market are actively investing in new product development and enhancements to existing platforms to address evolving operational and clinical needs. Recent developments include:
- January 2023: Ospitek introduced live patient charting for ASCs as part of an update to its proprietary surgical coordination platform, VIEW.
- November 2022: 3M Health Information Systems launched the 3M Ambulatory Potentially Preventable Complications (AM-PPCs) software to support patient safety and quality oversight in ASCs and hospital outpatient departments.
- October 2022: eClinicalWorks released version 12 of its EHR software, featuring faster performance, improved usability, pre-visit planning tools, enhanced procedure documentation, and workflow enhancements specific to ASC environments.
Lack of Federal EHR Mandates Limits Adoption in U.S. ASCs
Although electronic health record (EHR) adoption in office-based practices has increased from roughly 40% in 2008 to over 80%, adoption within ASC settings remains relatively low—around 20%, according to the Ambulatory Surgery Center Association. This disparity is largely due to the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act of 2009, which provided financial incentives and imposed penalties for non-compliance on hospitals and physicians, but did not mandate EHR adoption for ASCs. While this has slowed uptake, the low penetration rate also presents significant untapped opportunities for ASC software vendors.
North America Dominates the Global Market
North America accounts for a substantial share of the ambulatory surgical center software market, driven by a high concentration of ASCs, a growing volume of outpatient procedures, relatively higher adoption of digital solutions, favorable reimbursement policies, and a high prevalence of chronic diseases requiring surgical intervention. In the U.S., the number of Medicare-certified ASCs increased from approximately 5,200 in 2011 to 5,500 in 2015 and nearly 5,800 by 2020, with total ASC facilities estimated at around 11,800.
Reimbursement reforms have also supported market growth. Previously, ASC procedures were reimbursed based on the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), resulting in lower payment rates. However, from 2019 through 2023, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) transitioned to using the hospital market basket update for ASC payments, improving reimbursement levels and further encouraging ASC expansion and software adoption.
