Grey army march on GSK

14 Jul 03

Pensioner power is making GSK feel queasy as the US's grey army began a boycott of the company's products in protest at the clampdown on parallel imports of prescription drugs from Canada. Calling itself the 'Tums Down' campaign, a homage to GSKs popular OTC heartburn medication, the protest has considerable political support from Senators concerned that elderly citizens on fixed incomes are being forced to pay prices way above those of their peers in Canada. Though strictly speaking illegal, the trade in medicines purchased online and during day trips to Canada is huge, with estimates that over 1.1 million US citizens have bought medicines from their neighbours. A spokesman for GSK said, "We are concerned about the health and safety of our patients, GSK's decision to limit the supply of our medicines to Canadian internet operators who illegally sell prescription drugs to US residents is an issue of drug safety. It is also a matter of compliance with US law." However, a senate vote in late June allowed American chemists to buy prescription medicines in Canada in a controversial proposal strongly opposed by the US drugs industry.
