Don't die of embarrassment

02 Aug 05

The BBC reports today that home testing kits are to be sent out to people in their 60s in a bowel cancer screening programme for England.

The UK government has announced that the tests are meant to identify those who may have the disease, the second largest cause of cancer death in the UK. By 2009, everyone aged 60-69 will be asked to self-test every two years. The government hopes the privacy and dignity of the home testing kits will overcome people's natural reluctance to talk about symptoms.

Bowel cancer is the UK’s second biggest cancer killer after lung cancer. One in 18 people will develop the disease at some point in their lives and 46 people a day will die from it. If bowel cancer is detected in good time there is every chance of it being treated and cured.
