Innovative Inhaled Insulin Initiative in India

09 Aug 05

Not just an attempt to beat our record for the number of consecutive words in a sentence beginning with the same letter (anyone fancying a shot at the title, please contact us through the usual channels), but a genuinely interesting development from Eli Lilly India as reported by “new kerala .com”, according to whom the company has decided to launch, in India, phase-3 clinical trials of their inhaled insulin system, claimed to be an innovative treatment option for diabetes.

''We are going to start it soon.. to fully define the safety and efficacy of the Lilly/Alkermes inhaled insulin system in patients with diabetes,'' Eli Lilly CMD Rajiv Gulati told reporters. He, however, declined to give a deadline for commencing the study. ''The medicine offers people with diabetes convenience, control and flexibility. It is the first mealtime insulin and will be available at Rs 389 per cartridge,'' Mr Gulati said.

According to a study, every 12th person in Mumbai suffers from diabetic problems and this is expected to increase to every 5th person in 2008.
