Don't bother with detox products

05 Jan 09

A study by the charitable trust Sense About Science recently reviewed 15 detox products ranging from bottled water to face scrub, and found many manufacturers claims were "meaningless". The research was undertaken to help highlight "dodgy" science, where companies use phrases that sound scientific but do not actually mean anything.

According to the Oxford English dictionary, detox is the removal of toxic substances or qualities.

In the study, many products claimed to detoxify the body or flush away toxins, but they were criticised for not being backed by evidence.

The researchers warned that, at worst, some detox diets could be dangerous, and, at best, would be a waste of money. They claimed your body already has the ability to detox, and all you need is plenty of water, eating healthily and getting a good night's sleep.
