Be Nice to Nurses, its Nurse's Day

12 May 09

Nurses' Day is celebrated on 12 May each year, as a tribute to the amazing work of Florence Nightingale who was born on that day in 1820. Celebrating Nurses' Day is an opportunity for everyone around the world to remember the valuable contributions that nurses make to society. Events are taking place all across the country and nurses are encouraged to send an RCN eCard to their colleagues to celebrate the day and recognise the hard work undertaken by all nurses.

Despite this, The Royal College of Nursing claims that not enough students are interested in nursing as a career, and with 200,000 nurses retiring over the next decade - they are warning of a crisis looming.

In other nursing news, RCN Chief Executive & General Secretary, Dr Peter Carter, told delegates at the recent RCN congress that they have launched a brand new initiative telephone line which will allow RCN members to talk in confidence about serious and immediate worries that patient safety is being put at risk in their workplace. This follows the sacking of "whistleblower" Margaret Haywood and also nurse concerns raised at the Stafford Hospital where inspectors criticised "appalling" standards of emergency care.
