UK lifestyle linked to massive diabetes riseAccording to a report in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health the number of UK cases of Diabetes has risen 74% from 1997 to 2003. By 2005, 4% of the UK population are classed as having Diabetes. The majority are diagnosed with type 2 which is linked to lifestyle. Researchers from Spain and Sweden looked at data from almost five million UK medical records and claim that the rise is related to increasing obesity.

Douglas Smallwood, of Diabetes UK, said: "This research is a sad indictment of the current state of the UK's health ... research shows that losing weight can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58%.
